Volcano Experience, Crater Lake and Masaya Volcano, Half Day Tour
… a fun informative look at the various stages of volcanoes, perfect for anyone wanting to experience two types of volcanoes in one day
Julio Tours Nicaragua will pick you up from your hotel at 12:30pm in a comfortable air conditioned vehicle and drive to the first volcano which is now a “Crater Lake”. Apoyo Lagoon was declared a Natural Reserve in 1991. The influx and outflow of the water from the drainage basin keeps a natural balance to the water. However in the early part of this century it was noted that the lake has dropped 10 meters. The flora and fauna in this area is diverse, with 500 species of plants and trees, 230 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies and as well this reserve is home to monkeys, anteaters, iguanas, to mention a few. You can choose from kayaking, swimming, and hiking or just enjoy some lunch and relax in a hammock overlooking “La Laguna de Apoyo”.
At 4pm we will head out to the second volcano. Masaya is an impressive volcano and Nicaragua's "first" National Park. Masaya has been active for many centuries and continues to remain active today. The last major eruption was in 1776 when it destroyed the small town of Nindiri and recently in 1993 when many vehicles in the park were destroyed by rocks from the volcano. We will start at the museum where we learn about volcanos from the inside out. Then we will take a ten minute drive to the volcano site and because the sun has set, we will be able to see Masaya at its best. For those of you who are first time visitors of a volcano, this is a real treat. This night time tour allows you to see magma!
